Description
What makes REEI Different? We collaborate with departments and units across the College of Arts and Sciences and other university schools to offer students courses in a broad range of disciplines from anthropology to public affairs, form political science to informatics, from literature to security studies...and many more. REEI has been deisgnated as one of ony 10 U.S Department of Education-funded Title VI National Resource/ and one of 10 FLAS Centers for Russia and Eastern Europe for the 2018-2022 grant period.
We offer several unique opportunities for area and langauge study:
- MA Degree - 30 credit hours plus competency in an approved area language through oral examination
- Mid-career professional MA track - 30 credit hours (geared towards professionals who wish to advance their already established careers, for example: US Army Russian Foreign Area Officers)
- Dual degree programs with the Kelley School of Business, Luddy School of Informatics and Computer Engineering, Media School, O'Neill School of Public and Environmental Affairs, and School of Public Health
- A joint degree program with the Maurer School of Law
Students who plan to work with Russian and Russian sources should have completed the equivalent of two years of college-level Russian language study before matriculating into the program or are able to demonstrate a plan for doing so prior to the start of our program (for example, IU's Langauge Workshop (see below), a similar summer language program or through appropriate coursework. For students planning to work with another Slavic or East European language, there's no such expectation.
Generous support for most students is available, including FLAS Fellowships for both academic year and summer terms as well as graduate assistantships. Additional funding information can be found HERE.
Our MA programs prepare students for both non-academic careers as well as to pursue PhDs in their chosen discipline. Recent alumni placements include:
- U.S. Federal Government cvilian workforce
- U.S. Army
- U.S. Air Force
- American Councils for International Education (Kyiv)
- Amherst College Library
- NGOs in Russia and the United States
- Doctoral programs at University of Pennsylvania, Cornell University, University of Kent and University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill
- Private Energy Sector
- Budapest Bank
